Different sodium-ion material routes pursue different balances of energy, power, durability and manufacturing requirements. Compare complete cell designs, rather than assuming that one family name guarantees a particular result.
The positive electrode
- NFPP: usually denotes Na4Fe3(PO4)2P2O7, an iron-based mixed phosphate/pyrophosphate. Published research examines structural stability alongside conductivity and manufacturing challenges.
- Layered oxides: a family of compounds, not a single fixed formulation. Request the specific composition and operating window.
- Prussian blue and related materials: another positive-electrode family. CATL’s 2021 announcement, for example, described a Prussian-white positive electrode paired with hard carbon.
Hard carbon is a separate part of the specification
Hard carbon describes a negative-electrode material, not a positive-electrode route. Ask a material supplier for the test configuration, first-cycle efficiency, particle characteristics, moisture limits and batch documentation. The complete-cell customer should also define the matching electrode and electrolyte system.
What belongs on a comparison sheet
Record the exact material or cell model, test method, voltage range, loading, sample size and evidence date. Keep electrode-level capacity separate from full-cell energy. For procurement, add manufacturing consistency and delivery capability to laboratory performance. A well-defined specification is more useful than a ranking assembled from unrelated best-case numbers.
